Active holiday in Kopaonik: Snowshoeing

Adventure Holidays

Historically, snowshoes were essential for fur traders, hunters and others livelihoods depended on moving through deep, heavy snowfall. Traditional wooden snowshoes – often shaped like tennis rackets – can still be seen today as decorative pieces in mountain hotels, restaurants, and ski lodges. Modern snowshoes, however, are lightweight and durable, made from metal, plastic and synthetic materials designed for comfort and efficiency. At Kopaonik, snowshoes, along with hiking poles and gaiters, are available for rent at: Ski servis Stiv i Ski servis Gala Sport.

Snowshoes distribute body weight over a wider surface, preventing your feet from sinking deeply into the snow. Hiking poles are recommended to improve balance and stability while also engaging the upper body. Snowshoeing is essentially winter hiking and, under suitable conditions, is a safe and accessible outdoor activity. No special skills are required, and it is easy to learn, making it suitable for beginners. The only requirements are good general health and appropriate winter clothing for outdoor conditions. As an effective winter workout, snowshoeing is slightly more demanding than regular walking and can burn over 400 calories for hour. Snowshoeing is suitable for all ages and fitness levels.

Kopaonik Mountain offers ideal conditions for snowshoeing. The ski resort is located at approximately 1,700 m above sea level, while the wide plateau of Ravni Kopaonik provides excellent terrain for winter walks. Snowshoeing is typically available from December to April, depending on snow conditions. A minimum snow depth of around 20+ cm is required, while deeper snow creates an especially enjoyable experience. Weather conditions can be checked via the official mountain station, measured at 1,750 meters of altitude at this link. Our routes commonly include the Mushroom Trail, Markov Kamen circular trail, Treska Peak, night ascent to Pančić Peak, Gobelja peak, Metodje geyser, Kukavica Peak... Snowshoeing is also an eco-friendly activity that supports sustainable tourism and local businesses.
